Our story

The tree that gives twice

The olive tree has shaped life in Palestine for thousands of years — for its oil, its shade and its quiet, ancient presence in the hills. When an old tree is pruned, its wood is too good to waste. It is cut, seasoned and turned by hand into bowls that carry the tree's own rich grain, dark streaks and all. No two are alike. Zait works with the carvers who turn this wood, so every bowl is a small, singular piece of a very old tree.

How it's made

The wood comes from pruned olive trees, cut and seasoned until it is stable. Each bowl is turned by hand on a lathe, sanded smooth and finished with a food-safe oil, so the grain shows clearly and the bowl is ready for the kitchen.

How to use it

Use it for salads, fruit, nuts or bread, or as a piece to set on the table. Wash by hand with mild soap and water, dry it, and rub it with a little oil now and then to keep the grain rich.

Good to know

Is it sustainable?

Yes — the bowls are made from the pruned wood of existing olive trees, not from felling new ones. It is a way of using a resource the groves already produce.

How do I care for it?

Wash by hand with mild soap and warm water, dry it, and rub it occasionally with a little food-safe oil to keep the grain rich. It needs little more than that.

Will it crack or warp?

The wood is seasoned before turning, and olive wood is dense and stable. Keep it away from long soaking and harsh heat, and it will hold its shape for years.

Is it safe for food?

Yes — the bowls are finished with a food-safe oil and are made for serving food, salads, fruit and bread. They are not for the oven or microwave.

Is every bowl the same?

No — each bowl is turned from its own piece of wood, so the grain, the dark streaks and the exact shape are unique to it. That is part of what makes it a hand-made piece.

Where does the wood come from?

It comes from olive trees that are pruned in Palestine. Rather than letting the pruned wood go to waste, it is seasoned and turned by hand into bowls — the tree gives again.
